Md. Arif Chowdhury is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Climate and Disaster Management at Jashore University of Science and Technology, Bangladesh. Previously, he served as a Research Associate at the Institute of Water and Flood Management, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), from 2015 to 2020.
Mr. Chowdhury holds an M.Sc. in Water Resources Development from BUET, an M.Sc. in Climate Change and Development from Independent University, Bangladesh, and a Master's in Disaster Management from the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies, University of Dhaka. His academic journey began with a B.Sc. in Environmental Science from the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, University of Chittagong, Bangladesh.
He has received several research awards and grants, including the National Science and Technology (NST) Fellowship in 2018 in the Physical Science category from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. In 2019, he was awarded the Young Researcher Fellowship to conduct research on "Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) for Women and Girls with Disabilities in Dhaka," provided by Share-Net Bangladesh (link). He also received a grant under the Transboundary Rivers for Our Sustainable Advancement (TROSA) project, supported by the Center for Natural Resource Studies (CNRS).
Mr. Chowdhury completed the Gobeshona Young Researcher Programme 2017 at the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD), Independent University, Bangladesh, sponsored by USAID Bangladesh.
Beyond his academic and professional career, Mr. Chowdhury is actively involved in voluntary work at both national and international levels. He worked as an Active Citizen and participated in an International Study Visit in Uganda (2015). He attended the South Asia Journalism and Climate Change Adaptation Workshop, participated in an Article Hackathon Challenge, and contributed to his team during the 5th Asia-Pacific Adaptation Forum in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He also served as a facilitator at the World Humanitarian Summit – Global Youth Consultation in September 2015 in Doha, Qatar. Additionally, he took part in the 5th Asian Youth Summit 2017 in Osaka, Japan, organized by the Japan Asian Association and Asian Friendship Society, and the Oxfam Global Strategy Forum 2019 in Nairobi, Kenya.
Mr. Chowdhury has presented his research at various national and international conferences, including the Gobeshona Conference (2016, 2017, and 2020), INSEARCH Conference (2015), National Conference on Natural Sciences and Technology (NCNST) (2014), and the International Conference on Water and Flood Management (2017).
His research interests include water security, governance, disaster management and vulnerability assessment, climate change and extreme events, migration and adaptation, carbon sequestration, and floral diversity.
