Jashore University of Science and Technology was established in 2007 with the mission “to foster new ideas and innovation in science and technology, guided by a professional, technology-oriented, and humanistic focus, within a knowledge based culture of excellence to serve the nation and the world in the 21st century.” Academic activities began in the 2008–09 session with four departments. In the same year, the Faculty of Biological Sciences started its journey with the Departments of Microbiology and Fisheries and Marine Bioscience. The faculty later expanded with the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in 2010, the Department of Pharmacy in 2010, and most recently, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2024.

From the beginning, our Faculty has been dedicated to offering degrees at multiple levels: Bachelor of Science with Honors (B.Sc. Honors), Master of Science (M.S.) through three modes including Coursework (1 year), Mixed Mode combining coursework and thesis (1.5 years), and Research-based programs (2 years)– as well as Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs. Our departments are actively engaged in research across diverse fields of national importance, earning recognition both nationally and internationally. JUST has been ranked in the 601–800 band in Life Sciences for 2026 by Times Higher Education, which reflects the growing impact of our work.

The Faculty of Biological Sciences is committed to advancing learning through diverse coursework, faculty-led research laboratories, and real-world experiences. We emphasize responsible management of natural resources and ecosystems, recognizing their importance for sustainable development. Our programs integrate agricultural, biotechnological, microbial, and pharmaceutical sciences; biochemical and we adopt interdisciplinary approaches to education and research that prepare students to address complex challenges.

To support advanced research, the Faculty has established specialized facilities including the Genome Center, Modern Hatchery, Wet Lab, and others. Students also benefit from access to the Centre for Sophisticated Instrumentation and Research Laboratory (CSIRL), which is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments. These resources provide our students and researchers with the tools they need to pursue innovation and excellence in biological sciences.
